In the midst of rumors that US behemoth Disney’s Hotstar and Reliance’s JioCinema are merging, a developer is said to have bought the “JioHotstar” domain. According to reports, the merger is nearing completion following regulatory approvals.

In return for the domain, the Delhi-based developer has requested that Reliance Industries pay for his education at Cambridge University.
On the domain, the individual has posted a letter explaining his motivation for the move to executives at Reliance Industries.

“I thought that if they buy Hotstar, they might change the name to JioHotstar.com,” the unnamed individual stated. “I just wanted to purchase this domain because I might be able to fulfill my dream of attending Cambridge University if this merger takes place.”

The developer stated, “I couldn’t crack IIT and always wanted to learn from the best,” after being chosen for Cambridge University’s Accelerate program in 2021. Being accepted into this program after attending a Tier-II university was a tremendously beneficial and useful experience.

“I’ve always wanted to pursue entrepreneurship, but I’ve never been able to afford Cambridge’s full degree program in the subject. It’s pretty pricey,” he said.

The developer thinks that JioHotstar would be a perfect brand name for the merged company, preserving the brand equity of both platforms, now that the merger is all but confirmed.

To pay for tuition for Cambridge’s Executive MBA program, the individual is requesting ₹1 crore.
According to the developer, this is a “life-changing” opportunity for Reliance but a “minor expense.”

According to the most recent domain update, the individual disclosed that Reliance rejected the request and was pursuing legal action.
